Quarter Midget Setup Help

Tell it where the car is struggling and what it's doing, and it'll show you what to change.

This is setup knowledge that has been shared with us, that we have learned, that we have applied — but it is not complete. We learn every race. We hope it helps you!

Check this first

Is the car bottoming out?

Before you change ride height, check for bottoming. If the car is already hitting the track, you can't lower it — and lowering it will make the problem worse, not better.

Pick one

Where is it struggling, and what's it doing?

Every corner can be tight or loose, at entry, in the middle, or on exit. The changes come back grouped by system — shocks, stagger and rear axle, springs, panhard bars, weight — because you may already be out of adjustment on one of them. Work down the group that's still open to you.

1. Where is it struggling?

2. What is it doing?

Choose both, and the changes appear here.

Tight on entry

The car won't turn in when you first put it in the corner — it pushes up the track.

Shocks

  • Increase compression in RR shock
  • Increase rebound in front shocks
  • Reduce compression in front shocks

Stagger & rear axle

  • Increase rear tire stagger
  • Move RR tire out on axle

Springs

  • Reduce front spring rate

Panhard bar

  • Lower front panhard bar

Weight

  • Increase cross weight (RF – LR)

Loose on entry

The back steps out as soon as you turn in, before the middle of the corner.

Shocks

  • Increase compression in front shocks
  • Reduce rebound in LF shock
  • Reduce compression in RR shock

Stagger & rear axle

  • Reduce rear tire stagger
  • Move RR tire in on axle

Springs

  • Increase front spring rate
  • Reduce rear spring rate

Panhard bar

  • Raise front panhard bar
  • Lower rear panhard bar

Weight

  • Decrease cross weight (RF – LR)

Tight in the middle

It turns in, then stops turning through the centre of the corner.

Shocks

  • Increase compression in RR shock
  • Increase rebound in front shocks

Stagger & rear axle

  • Increase rear tire stagger
  • Move RR tire out on axle

Springs

  • Reduce front spring rate
  • Increase RR spring rate

Panhard bar

  • Lower front panhard bar

Loose in the middle

It's free through the centre — the back won't settle once you're off the brake.

Shocks

  • Increase compression in front shocks
  • Reduce compression in RR shock

Stagger & rear axle

  • Reduce rear tire stagger
  • Move RR tire in on axle

Springs

  • Increase RF spring rate
  • Reduce RR spring rate

Panhard bar

  • Raise front panhard bar
  • Lower rear panhard bar

Tight on exit

It won't rotate off the corner — you're waiting on the wheel to come back straight.

Shocks

  • Reduce rebound in LR shock

Stagger & rear axle

  • Increase rear tire stagger
  • Move RR tire out on axle

Springs

  • Increase RR spring rate
  • Reduce LR spring rate

Weight

  • Reduce cross weight

A corner exit problem is usually an entry or mid-corner problem.

Loose on exit

It breaks away as you pick the throttle up on the way out.

Shocks

  • Increase rebound in LR shock

Stagger & rear axle

  • Reduce rear tire stagger
  • Move RR tire in on axle

Springs

  • Reduce RR spring rate
  • Increase LR spring rate

Panhard bar

  • Lower rear panhard bar

Weight

  • Increase cross weight

If it's loose off, check whether it was loose in the middle too — fixing that usually fixes the exit.

Tight everywhere

The car won't rotate anywhere in the corner. Fix the whole corner, not one end of it.

More rotation, whole corner

  • Increase stagger
  • Lower the front panhard bar (frame side)
  • Add grip with tilt changes if needed

Loose everywhere

Too much rotation for the whole corner. Calm the car down before chasing corner-specific fixes.

Less rotation, more stability

  • Reduce stagger
  • Lower the right side
  • Lower rear panhard bar (frame side)
  • Increase LR spring rate if the problem is loose off

Not tight or loose

Two whole-car problems.

These aren't corner-specific, so they sit outside the picker.

The whole car needs more grip

The car is balanced but sliding.

  • Lower the right side
  • Make grip-increasing panhard bar changes — lower front and rear, frame side

Too stuck, dragging not driving

The car is into the track: generating too much grip and using up energy rolling instead of going forward.

  • Raise the right side, or lower the left
  • Increase right side spring rate, front and rear, 10 lb
  • Lower the car — ride height left and right together, having checked for bottoming first
  • Raise both front and rear panhard bars on the frame side

Where this came from

Compiled by G² Racing over many seasons — from our own notes, our own mistakes, and the experience of other racers.

With the biggest single contribution from Advanced Racing Suspensions.

A general starting point, not a set of rules. Check for bottoming before changing ride height. Follow your chassis builder's guidance and your track's rules first.
